Black and white are the colors of the Dominican Order
and each community has its own crest. As Daughters of
Saint Dominic we chose a star and torch to represent our
community. For they represent Saint Dominic's call to be
a light to the world and to be an instrument of the Holy
Spirit. While Dominic was still in his mother's womb she was
given a vision of a dog carrying a lighted torch in its
mouth and setting the world on fire. |

This was to
symbolize the fire (The Holy Spirit) that God
would set aflame in the hearts of all people
who were to hear Dominic preach.
At his baptism, as the holy water was being poured down
his head, the noble woman who was holding him saw a star
shining from his forehead. This was later confirmed by
Sister Cecelia, who knew Dominic personally and in her
testimony she said, "From his forehead and between his
brows, there shown forth a kind of radiant light, which
filled men with respect and love." |
